Executive Summary

  • PROUD surveyed Port Dalhousie area residents in the month of July, 2004 regarding their views on:
    1. Draft principles for any development in the Port downtown core, and
    2. The proposed development as known at the time
  • Approximately 1425 surveys were distributed to Port area households and 546 surveys were
    returned
  • Represents 737 residents
  • Response rate of 38%
    - The return rate for the laet municipal election was 29.7%
    - Same-type survey can reach 30-35%* typically is 5-10%

  • For any development:
       Port supports mixed development: 88%, with limits:
    • 94% want to "Maintain and Enhance Public Spaces"
    • 94% are concerned about "Parking and Traffic Flow"
    • 92% want to "Preserve Look and Feel" of Port
  • For the proposed development:
    • Moderate support for 'recreational components'
    • Skating Path: (56%), Theatre: (35%) and Moving Carousel: (31%)
    • Limited support for 'commercial components'
    • Condos (24%), Hotel (23%) and Retail (15%)
    • Minimal support for a Tower (10%) and Demolishing Heritage Buildings (6%)
    Caution: There exists the potential for compromise evidenced by quantitative
    'middle' responses and qualitative, directional comment.
