Re:
Protecting Port Dalhousie from Inappropriate Development
Dear
Chair Partington and Regional Councillors:
My
family and I have been enjoying Port Dalhousie
and Lakeside Park for many years and we are extremely
concerned about the developer's proposal for the
commercial area. We are particularly concerned
about the fact St. Catharines' City Council ignored
its own planning regulations and approved the
proposal and are counting on you to protect Port
Dalhousie.
Our
specific concerns include:
- The development is too massive for Port and
will aggravate parking and traffic problems.
Parking and traffic are already more than a
little village with only two entrances can support.
This huge development will lead to a traffic
and parking nightmare. We will never be able
to access Port - particularly on a nice summer
weekend.
- The development does not respect the unique
character. In particular, condo towers and heritage
districts don't mix. The proposed 63 metre (207
ft.) tower is the height of a 20-21 storey building
and higher than Niagara Falls. Condo towers
don't belong in the small, quaint village of
Port Dalhousie. Save the heritage district and
put this tower in Toronto or Chicago.
- The development will severely restrict our
ability to enjoy this unique part of the City.
Lakeside Park has long been a destination for
families to enjoy sunset watching, relaxing
strolls and the beach. We have already lost
Michigan Beach and Port Weller. This development
will likely mean the end of our last public
beach area in the City. Once the first tower
is built there will be many. You will not be
able to say NO to the next developer.
We
strongly urge that you, our elected Regional representatives,
reject this application. Send the developer back
to the drawing board and ask them to submit an
application that respects the unique character
of Port (and the approved Official Plan, Secondary
Plan for Port Dalhousie and Heritage Guidelines).
Once that character is gone, it's gone forever!
I look forward to your response.
